Chemical Compositions of Perilla frutescens Britton var . Crispa Decaisne Cultivated in Different Area of Korea

Abstract
The unsaponifiables in the oil from Perlila frutescens Britton var. Crispa Decaisne were separated into 4,4-dimethyl sterol, 4-monomethyl sterol, and 4-desmethyl sterol fractions by thin layer chromatography. The content of 4-desmethyl sterol fraction was more than 60% of the unsaponifiables, and 4,4-dimethyl sterol and 4-monomethyl sterol fraction were detected in trace. Sterol compositions in total sterol, sterylester, sterylglycoside and free sterol fractions showed great differences among the sterol, fractions and some variation among the cultivation area of the plant. The content of ¥â-sitosterol, ¥Ä^5-ayenasterol, campesterol and stigmasterol were 55¡73, 13¡33, 9¡11, 3¡11% of the Total sterol in free sterol fraction, 80¡85, 11¡14, 4¡8 and trace-1% of the total sterol in sterylglycoside fraction, and 78¡82, 13¡15, 4¡6 and 0.3¡0.8% of the total sterol in total sterol fraction, respectively. However, in sterylester fraction, 99% of the total sterol were tentatively identified as ¥â-sitosterol. The structure of the sterols obtained from unsaponifiables of the perilla oil by GLC were identified as ¥Ä^5-avensterol (RRT, 1.13), ¥â-sitosterol (RRT, 1.00), stigmasterol (RRT, 0.88) and campesterol (RRT, 0.81) by GLC-MS.
